Photosynthesis is a chemical process by which green plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy (usually from the sun) into chemical energy stored in glucose (a sugar molecule). The general equation for photosynthesis is: 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + sunlight → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ This means six molecules of carbon dioxide and six molecules of water, in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll, produce one molecule of glucose and six molecules of oxygen. Photosynthesis is important because it: Produces oxygen necessary for most living organisms to survive. Removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Provides the base of the food chain.
